I’m going to be completely honest about luck, though you might not believe it. The less in your life that you leave up to chance the luckier you’re going to be.
Some people in life seem to have all the luck. Fate seems ever-inclined in their favor, and the sunshine of destiny always seems to shine in their direction. Things just work out for them.
Why is this so? Are there just some people who are randomly lucky or unlucky? Do the lucky folks have some secret method for influencing the universe to work in their favor?
It might sound far out, but there are indeed reliable ways that successful people have discovered for creating your own luck. These individuals, either knowingly or unknowingly, have developed a system, for the creation of success. They have learned, through trial and error to put themselves into places and situations that provide opportunities. Once those opportunities present themselves, these individuals apply focus and hard work to make sure their goals come to fruition.
If you’re tired of letting fate rule your life and are aiming at achieving some sort of control over this thing called ‘luck’ here are 8 reliable methods.
1. Increase your sociability
Introduce yourself to people at parties. It’s hard to create your own luck without involving other people. Widen that social circle whenever possible. Attend meetings, seminars, and build up that professional network to open up avenues of opportunities. This is one of the fastest and best ways to open doors in your life, and that’s something that always happens to lucky people. So put yourself out there and try and meet as many new folks as possible.
But don’t stop there. When you’re drowning in newfound luck, it’s easy to forget about those old friends- but don’t! Maintain the bonds you’ve already built in your personal and professional life and nurture those relationships just as you would a plant in your garden. Remember, luck is about open doors, and relationships, when well-tended, almost always lead to new and exciting possibilities.
2. Imagination is Your Steering Wheel
I cannot emphasize the importance of visualization in life, primarily as a mechanism for creating good fortune. For instance, the greatest CEO’s and athletes in our society utilize this skill on a daily basis. Even if you are prepping for a job interview or significant presentation, visualizing how you will behave and perform ahead-of-time can make all the difference in the world. Think about it: Success and failure, fortune and disaster, all within your control. All you have to do is merely see the outcome, and enact it just as you envision!
Keep the end goal in mind, then map out your path to success and envision where you want to be in a day, a month, or even ten years from now. How does your personal success appear in your mind’s eye? Now step backward, piece by piece until you get to where you actually are now. Seeing each specific detail will help you along the way.
3. Make others aware of your luck through sharing it.
A rising tide raises all ships. Fortunate people don’t covet their prosperity, but rather share freely of their extra time and resources whenever possible. They assist others just because it is the right thing to do and they also do it with no expectation of return. This is how lucky people behave.
The truth is that giving reminds us of how lucky we actually are. There are also numerous principles regarding giving that will see it coming back to you in myriad and unexpected ways. There are entire books written on this.
4. Stay open to synchronicity and chaos
Variety is the spice of life. How boring indeed would be a life of predictability behind every turn. Don’t allow yourself to become stuck in a rut. Take some chances and experience new things. If you turn away, you will undoubtedly become bored and unsatisfied with your surroundings. Lucky people are open to the world around them and often let chaos happen.
Adhering to this principle will allow you the opportunity to expand and gain new insights; to learn new perspectives or possibly meet someone you would never usually meet. When you allow life to happen simply, amazing things get the chance to germinate.
5. Keep your eyes open for luck.
You don’t always stumble over luck. It’s not still randomness. Sometimes you actually have to keep a look-out for it. You can learn to spot luck once you start looking. Euphemistically saying, you must learn to spot an opportunity when it presents itself. That’s not always easy and can take time and patience.
So one way you can create luck is by being aware of your circumstances and surroundings. Listen to your intuition about things, and don’t be afraid to follow your hunches. Get out there!
6. Take a Gamble.
Of course, we are talking about calculated, educated, informed risk. This is essential if you are to create your own luck. Breaking out beyond your comfort zone will help you expand and grow? How will you see the new doors and opportunities? You have to push yourself to do more and take advantage of favorable circumstances whenever available.
And, most assuredly, strike while the iron is hot! We have to act. All too often corporations and individuals succeed or fail due to their failure to just work. Remember that National Hockey League legend Wayne Gretzky once said, “I always miss 100 percent of the shots I don’t take.”
7. Make your luck through hard work.
Psychologist Richard Wiseman has conducted numerous studies on luck, and the qualities of the very lucky. His findings have indicated that if a person thinks they’ll be lucky, they will generally experience far more good fortune than someone who feels the opposite.
Around 82 percent of so-called lucky people state that they are prepared to work hard and create their own luck. They also test in the top percentiles for the qualities of positive attitude and resilience in the face of adversity.
On the contrary, unlucky people are often fatalistic and persist in the idea that no matter what they try to do, they will still be unfortunate. As Doctor Wiseman astutely notes, all of that negative or positive thinking actually becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
8. Try and look on the bright side
Humans have a tendency to always listen to the other side of the fence when things aren’t going well. Instead of falling into this trap the next time you’re down, why not instead self-reflect on your accomplishments in your life that has helped you arrive where you are today. Setbacks and downers are inevitable, we all know this. The significant difference is that the people who make their own luck view these setbacks as merely bump in the road to success and happiness.
Additionally, all that green grass that looks so good and inviting on the other side of the fence might not be all that it’s cracked up to be. Be fair and realistic with yourself. There are silver linings everywhere if you only take a moment to look. People that make their own luck are very good at this. Become one of those people.
