Effective communication results in an understanding and increased productivity at the workplace. Employees learn how to interact with their colleagues and their leaders, and vice versa. For managers and leaders, it’s especially tough to communicate without being perceived as bossy or as a dictator. In the case of employees sensing such elements, it’s hard to control what happens next. As it is, they are a lot of pressure to deliver, and adding a bossy, demanding boss on top of it all, doesn’t help.
However, there are several ways to get the point across, and they are;

Utilize technology

Nowadays, there are many tech software that has enabled easy communication. Some come with email templates, e.g., pro-Email writer. Others have enabled the creation of chat rooms and video conferencing. Such technologies assist managers in passing on urgent messages, follow-ups and evens motivate their employees. Nonetheless, one should not be too reliant on technology as it’s more convenient for a face time conversation.

Conduct daily progress checks

Checkups are necessary to track progress if done non-intrusively. The best way to do it is by conducting stand-up meetings. They take less time during which each employee reviews what they will be working on for the day. The meetings keep everybody up to speed and in line with the company and individual goals. The same can be done during closing time. Sit-down meetings can assist in giving feedback and setting tomorrow’s agendas.

Offer feedback

Understand when it’s time for positive or negative feedback
Feedbacks are always appreciated. It means that employee’s efforts aren’t going unnoticed. The issues are, however, how and when to give positive and negative feedback. For instance, new employees need encouragement. Therefore, it would be better to focus on the positives to keep them motivated. Also, avoid sounding like you are making demands. The goal of feedback is to boost productivity; hence it should be met with an open mind and heart.

Use a feedback model.

According to author Jocelyn K. Glei, it is essential to appreciate the employees, make known of the expectations of the individual and the team goals. Furthermore, a feedback model includes asking members to be open to feedback, describing different situations and their impacts, and finally finding the way forward.


Managers sometimes face tough situations. They, therefore, have to negotiate with the employees for a better outcome. Instead of gunning for a win, let everyone come out of the negotiation feeling like they won. Using open-ended questions, mirroring the demands of the other party, and helping the other party view the situation from your perspective are the best strategies. They help come up with a viable solution. Oh, and also, do not commit. Otherwise, it can cause problems if everything falls apart.

The workplace should be a happy place so that employees feel safe to do their best. Managers should, therefore, use the right strategies to communicate and show respect and appreciation to the employees.
