A blog could be thought of as an online journal where the writer provides subject-specific information, reflections or his/her thoughts and opinions on certain issues. Blogging is associated with many benefits, particularly concerning personal development. For example, blogging allows people to express themselves, share knowledge with others and even improve their writing skills. Blogging could also help bloggers to network with other people. However, to benefit from all this, you need a blog.
The good news is that you do not have complex technical skills for you to start a blog. You could do it in four simple steps:
1. Choose a Subject Area
This is by far the most important decision you will have to make before starting your blog. The subject area of the blog determines not only the content that will appear in the blog but also the kind of audience that the blog will attract. It is often advisable to choose a general subject area to make it easier to change content without diverting from the main subject area of the blog. Some common subject areas for blogs include travel, recipes, eating-out, DIY projects and technology among others.
2. Pick a Name
Once you have selected a subject area for your blog, it is now time to think about the name of the blog. The blog name is important in making a good first impression as it is the first thing that people are likely to see. A good blog name should be easy to remember and should also act as a pointer on the kind of content to expect on the blog. The name should also be unique so that it easily stands out from others.
3. Registering the Domain Name and Web Hosting
After identifying a suitable name for your blog, the next step is to register the domain name and to choose a website hosting service. In this step, there are two viable options. First, you could choose to go with free web-hosting services such as those provided by Tumblr. The disadvantage with these is that the blog name may not look unique. Additionally, there may be limitations on the blog design and the plugins you can use.
Alternatively, you could opt to go with self-hosting. This involves buying your domain name and renting web-hosting services from companies such as DreamHost, BlueHost, and HostGator among others.
4. Install a Content Management Tool
The last step is to install a content management system. These are tools that are used in the creation and design of digital content. One of the best content management systems for blogs is WordPress. It also comes free of charge. After installation, make sure to modify the design of the blog by choosing an appropriate theme.
